Alessandro
Mendini

1931 – 2019

A man of many facets, Alessandro Mendini began his journey in the world of design by joining the prestigious Nizzoli studio. He had just earned his degree in architecture from the Polytechnic School of Milan (1959).

During the 1970s, Alessandro Mendini established himself as a master of words and forms, working as an editor for magazines such as Casabella, Domus, and Modo. He also took part in radical design movements like Global Tools, Alchimia, and Memphis, sharing a bold and innovative vision with figures such as Ettore Sottsass and Gaetano Pesce.
Driven by a personal and daring vision of design, Alessandro Mendini gave birth to unique, self-produced creations, defying the principles of functionalism and the gears of mass production. The designer ventured into the intriguing concept of controdesign, defining everyday objects with a deliberate strangeness in relation to their original function or aesthetic.

Most of his creations are based on repetitive frieze-like patterns, with an undeniable influence from Ancient Greece. Alessandro Mendini shifts the usual aesthetic of an object without altering its use. The furniture remains functional, but transforms into sculptural and colorful works of art.

Alessandro Mendini left an indelible legacy in contemporary design, constantly pushing the boundaries of creativity until his passing in 2019.
