McConnico’s Aesthetic: American Refinement

In the 1980s, Hilton McConnico became particularly well known for his work as a film production and costume designer. He created the sets for several films, including Jean-Jacques Beineix’s La Lune dans le caniveau, and in 1984 received the César Award for Best Production Design. This experience would have a lasting influence on his approach to design: for McConnico, objects, color, and mise-en-scène were inseparable. From the late 1980s onwards, he expanded his practice into furniture, interior design, and the decorative arts, developing a distinctive style that was instantly recognizable.

McConnico’s work lies at the crossroads of several cultural worlds. It evokes the American culture of the 1980s while incorporating a distinctly European sophistication. Its opulence, colors, patterns, and precious materials recall the flamboyant aesthetic of the decade, when fashion, cinema, and design shared the same taste for the spectacular.

Yet this profusion is never merely decorative. McConnico composed his pieces like images: combining forms and materials rarely brought together, appropriating familiar motifs and giving them an entirely new dimension. His approach is above all visual and narrative, closely related to the language of cinema. Each object contributes to the construction of a world of its own.

The Cactus series thus embodies a genuine art of living: a theatrical, generous, and refined interior in which furniture and objects become the actors in an everyday mise-en-scène.

Often conceived as private commissions or produced in small quantities, pieces from the Cactus series rarely appear on the market today. This limited production, combined with the singularity of McConnico’s formal language and the diversity of materials he employed, gives these works a particularly rare status within the landscape of 1980s design.

Through these pieces, McConnico brings together refinement and rarity, offering a highly personal vision of an imagined America: colorful, theatrical, and sophisticated.
