Gerd Arens, the neon master

1943 –

After training in neon light signage, Gerd Arens obtained his “master craftsman” diploma. He became one of the founders of Pentagon Gruppe in 1985.

His works are crafted in blue or red neon. Notable pieces include the Neonstehleuchte (1987) and Stehlampe mit Neon (1990) lamps, as well as the Buchstützen (1987) bookends and the triangular lamp Neontriangel (1986).

Gerd Arens enjoyed playing with magnetic attraction. He created a series of furniture composed of tubular steel structures, with bulbs connected by magnets. These could be moved or removed, creating a striking display of sparks. Among his creations are the floor lamps Pentagon Stehleuchte (1989) and Bogenlampe (1990), as well as the Hängeleuchte chandelier (1990).

For the Café Casino, he designed one of the counter table Stehtisch für das Café Casino (1987).
