Pesce also chose the Broadway chairs to furnish the cafeteria of the legendary Chiat\Day  TBWA agency in New York. Archival photographs reveal a set of six high stools—likely custom-designed for the interior layout of the advertising agency. Indeed, these stools do not appear in any other known documentation on the Broadway series.

The Broadway chair is perhaps the most accessible entry point into Gaetano Pesce’s singular universe. Whether around a dining table or at a desk, the Broadway chair playfully bounces with the movement of its user. Perched atop its springs, Pesce envisioned it just as he envisioned the world: as a place where you never quite know what foot to stand on.

The Broadway series

Through his Broadway series (1993–2001), Gaetano Pesce sought to give equal importance to function and form. Composed of a table, a stool, two chairs, and an armchair, the Broadway collection was designed to adapt to the domestic and familial environment.

The Broadway pieces are a true explosion of color, set atop spring-mounted legs that give them a playful and flexible quality. The rigidity of the resin combined with the metal framework ensures their functionality.

Each piece in the collection does have a unique number. Produced in limited series, the Broadway collection is believed to have been made in the following quantities*:

  • 20 tables (model 931)
  • 200 stools (model 927)
  • 300 armchairs with 8 legs and armrests (model 929)
  • 1,000 nine-legged chairs (model 932) — although only around 200 are believed to have actually been produced
  • 3,000 four-legged chairs (model 928)

To this can be added the 6 tall stools, which were not assigned any specific model number.
